"Dream and life are two completely different things, dreams are reel and life is real. You have to live before dreaming." Prince
Born and raised in the famous steel city of India, Bokaro, Prince Kumar is an artist with big dreams and a good grip on reality. He graduated in Fine Arts from Patna Arts College, India, and has been producing an extraordinary range of art work for the past 10 years. His years of practice and natural talent are manifested in the ease with which he moves on from one medium to another and from an abstract design to intricate Indian traditional art forms. He takes inspiration from life and nature around him. As a professional artist he understands the need to be able to customize his work according to the taste, budget and dimension articulated by various art connoisseurs.
With an innate inclination towards art, his skills became evident when he was a young boy and his family members supported him to fulfill his desire to become a professional artist. However, nothing came easily to Prince, as struggle became his constant companion since he was two years old.
An early loss - hearing and speech
Prince was two years old when, while playing, he accidently put a sharp object in one of his ears and, as a result, lost 60% hearing in the right and 40% in the left ear. The loss of hearing also damaged his speech because of which he is unable to speak properly. His art work became his mode of expression and encouraged him to dream and achieve.
Growing up – a budding artist
From a very early age Prince started drawing cartoons and painting landscape which his father noticed and started supporting him. With time and practice, Prince continued to get better with paint brush and pencils, and started participating in fine art contests. Along with winning many prizes, he received tremendous love and admiration in his community and school. Having earned the accolades, his belief in his skill deepened and he decided to seriously pursue his dream of becoming a professional artist.
Fine arts education – struggles and support
To become a professional artist, Prince needed admission into a competitive fine arts degree program which required substantial and continuous expenses. With much effort, his father managed to get the initial contributions but they soon realized that getting admission was not enough. To sustain his education, Prince had to pay for the tuition fee, boarding, lodging, art materials etc. which was impossible for his father to bear. However, Prince’s single-minded dedication for learning enabled his father to find many kind people who contributed and sponsored his food, lodging, and art materials.
After college – Struggle for a steady income
Despite completing his fine arts degree with excellent marks, Prince was unable to get a job or recognition which at some point shattered his dreams. At the same time he continued to practice his art more and looked for a steady source to provide for basic sustenance.
Prince started teaching poor kids with minimal tuition fees which gradually gave him recognition as a teacher. That income allowed for basic livelihood, but only teaching was not his dream. He also wanted to be seen as an artist so he continued to create art and poured in all his passion and hard work.
Artist working as a daily wage labour
Prince wanted to showcase his work as an artist, but due to limited contacts and support network coupled with his disability, he was not able to. Despite the limitation he made the best use of every opportunity that came his way and did not shy away from taking art assignments as a daily wage labour. Hence, he took assignments for wall painting/street art for businesses, temples, and private homes, creating amazing art pieces while being paid minimal wage rates. Though his desire to be established as an artist was shattered, his passion for creating art remained as strong as ever!
The big dream – his motivation
Prince dreams of creating a non-profit organisation to provide free art education for underprivileged and differently abled children. He would like to do it to express his gratitude since teaching poor children for minimal fee provided him the much needed livelihood when he was struggling to get work. However, he understands that he needs to have enough resources in order to create a large scale organisation.
An artist with unique offering
Prince’s ability to work with different mediums (oil, water, pencil, charcoal, acrylic etc.) enables him to create an unparalleled range of art pieces, each with perfection. He likes to express his vision through his artwork and he offers unlimited options for customization with style, medium, dimension, and budget.
Hopeful for the future
Understanding the real value of Prince’s work, his extended family members and friends started showcasing his work that gradually earned him the much deserved acknowledgment. He is now making art for people from Australia, USA, UK, Middle East, Thailand, Norway as well as his home base in India. He sees hope for the future but without getting distracted by the attention, he continues to be absorbed in creating art that brings him and all of us much joy.
Your support for Prince will help make art education accessible to many deserving but under resourced people. Thank you for your contribution towards making Prince’s dreams come true!
